Subscribe to Guitar Friendly: How does it work?

You might have noticed that on Guitar Friendly’s home page, in the middle column, there is a newly added “Subscribe to Guitar Friendly” area. This is a new and easy way for you to stay up to date with all the newest guitar lessons, videos, and tips added to Guitar Friendly!

How does it work?

You can either subscribe by email or to our RSS feed. If you subscribe by email, whenever there is new content added to the Guitar Friendly blog, whether it be guitar lessons, videos, tips, or anything else, you will receive an email of that content right to your email box.

If you subscribe to our RSS feed, you will need an RSS reader. One free and easy to use RSS reader is Google Reader. All you have to do is add the URL of our RSS feed into your reader.

How To Play Guitar Fast! 5 Tips to Increase Speed

In my post “Thoughts on Practice from a Wise, Old Guitarist,” I asked Bill, a well-aged retired, professional guitar player how to increase my guitar speed after hearing how fast he played on his old recordings. He just told me to “practice, practice, and practice.” But how do we practice when we want to learn how to play guitar fast?

1. Start slow, Speedy

This couldn’t be more important. Practice playing guitar scales slow at first with proper fingering, posture, and technique. Set a metronome at a slow speed then practice at faster speeds. It’s really boring at first (I won’t lie to you), but it’ll be harder to play guitar faster if you don’t have good technique. You must walk before you run.

2. Alternate Picking

Thoughts on Practice from a Wise, Old Guitarist

Just recently, I found a guy in my local newspaper selling quite a few quality, vintage guitars for a ridiculously cheap amount of money. In my interest, I called him and arranged a time to go over to see the guitars he was selling. He had a lot of guitars listed in the paper, but WOW, when I walked into the house there were high quality guitars everywhere! Hung on the walls, stored in cases behind the couch–everywhere!

His reason for selling his guitars was simply, “I’m just getting too old.” Bill was 81 years old. In talking to him, I found out that he actually played professionally all throughout his life. He ended up showing me some of his recordings, and man, they were impressive! Bill played guitar at lightning speeds with flawlessness.
